Bob & Gene: lost soul gem!
This is mostly an indie music blog, but occasionally I won’t be able to help myself and I’ll post about other musical loves, like oldies (especially the soul/ r&b side of it), old-timey or whatever else I feel like.
It’s like something you’d make up for that novel about a lonely music geek that you’re writing: a record collector finds an obscure 45 of an obscure musical group from a town that’s not in the usual musical circles with an even more obscure reference to an upcoming album that, as far as anyone can tell, never came out. Bob & Gene (myspace) were 15 and 16 when they recorded an album in Bob’s father’s basement recording studio in Buffalo, NY.
Daptone Records recently issued Bob & Gene’s If this World Were Mine. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of what Numero Group’s been doing, releasing long lost soul on comps much to the appreciation of aficionados and collectors alike.
Bob & Gene – Your Name (mp3)
“Your Name” starts with funky bass, then these huge drums come in. If your head isn’t doing stuff by this stage, check that you have a pulse. Once the sax and organ are driving things—forget it!—I’m sold. It’s like something you might find in one of those scenes in Ocean’s 11 where the heroes are getting away with it except way funkier.
You can buy this record at insound or Daptone (see link above).
