the problem with hipsters running mp3 blogs

Here’s the crux of the situation: hipsters (or music snobs, or whatever) are not particularly well-suited to music blogging. With hipsters there’s always an undercurrent of hyper-oneupmanship. There is incredible pride and prestige to be gained from being the “first” (at least, publically) to talk about a band. I’m not denying that I have these impulses myself. I’m still kicking myself that I was the second person at KZSU to play Sufjan, rather than the first.

This becomes a problem when things escalate and bloggers start getting attention for bands they’ve already “discovered.” Logically, it’s obvious that if you post about thousands of new bands, some of them will turn out to become more popular and you’ll be seen as a “taste maker” when people go back and look who posted about them first. Prestige will follow. The average quality of bands usually goes down when you enter this shotgun-style mp3 posting. I love stereogum, but 11 posts yesterday, at least half with mp3s? And let’s not even talk about the overload with brooklynvegan on most days (again, I’m a faithful reader). We’re not even talking about largeheartedboy, gorilla v bear, you ain’t no picasso, said the grammophone, etc etc yet. It’s not possible to absorb all that music.

As much as I’d like to become a cutting edge taste maker, I don’t want to be one of “those” blogs.

I’d like to pledge to you, Dear Reader, two things:

  1. I’ll post about high quality bands
  2. I’ll keep the number of posts a day to a level where you can reasonably read all of them if you want

[…] Stereogum posts about approximately 42 thousand bands a day. It can be a little much (as I’ve mentioned before). I listened through a lot of their recent mp3s and found a couple that warranted another mention here. […]
