4 bands it took me a while to get into
I love lists, like any good music geek. I hope to regularly post ridiculous lists.
Sometimes bands take a while for me to get into. I’ll dislike them and then come back and like them later. Some of the most prominent examples are below.
4 bands it took me a while to get into (when I first heard them, about how long it took me to get into them, most extreme band-crush action):
- Low (early 2001, a year and a half, own 8 of their albums/ compilations including the rarities one, attended three concerts)
- Magnetic Fields (1997, two and a half years, own five albums including one I previously gave away)
- Sigur Ros (2001, two years; own 3 of their albums and an EP, rate one the second best of 2005)
- the Hold Steady (July 2005, 6-8 months; saw them live, bought tickets to see them again 7 months later, bought two albums)
There are others that could be on that list, of course, but those examples aren’t quite as extreme and usually didn’t take as long for me to turn around with them.

Man, I remember that time at the Dormont Record Exchange when you got The Curtain Hits the Cast before I was able to get to the “L” section. And you didn’t even like Low yet. I still haven’t ever found a used copy of that record. Maybe I should just buy it already…
[...] Going into the show I had reasons to want this show to be good and reasons I secretly hoped it would be bad. The Magnetic Fields are one of the bands I’ve liked the longest while still having never seen them. I narrowly missed seeing them (for $8! oh, those were simpler times!) in 1999 and didn’t manage to see any tours after that. Anyway, I wanted to love it because it’d mean that all these years of wait were worth it. I wanted to hate it because, well, then I wouldn’t have to kick myself for all those missed opportunities. In the end, it was somewhere in between. [...]
