pre-order the crazy rare acoustic finger-picked heartfelt singer songwriter

I don’t think I’m the only one that thinks it’s a bit weird that two different heartfelt acoustic, often finger-picked singer songwriters are both having their rare work posthumously issued soon. The two are Elliott Smith and Nick Drake. One everyone compares any hushed singer songwriter with, the other, it’s every finger-picked singer/ guitarist.

If you want early Elliott Smith, I should remind you, you should look no further than his first album, Roman Candle. People always seem to miss that one.

New Moon will be issued by Smith’s early label, Kill Rock Stars. It’s a 2 disc (for a pretty cheap price) set of demos and rarities from 1994-1997. It’s getting good early reviews; it’s classic Elliott Smith. It’s not all previously unreleased, though, as, at least “Trouble” has been released twice before and a chunk of the songs had leaked as demos last year or the year before.

New Moon comes out this Tuesday, 5/8. Pre-order New Moon from insound.

Nick Drake’s family/ estate is issuing Family Tree, with 27 songs on one disc. Get more info at p4k. He does a number of covers, including one of my favorite folk tunes, Jackson Frank’s, Blues Run the Game.

Family Tree is slated to come out June 19. amazon has it, though at an odd (high) price.

[…] Adrian (me): Simon & Garfunkel - Blues Run the Game (mp3) (buy) I was reintroduced to this song when I was listening to the forthcoming Nick Drake album. He did a version of this Jackson Frank song (who, incidentally, had a fascinating story). I went back and listened to various versions by Drake, Frank himself, but my favorite is still the version I first heard of this beautiful folk song, the Simon and Garfunkel version. I’ve been listening to this song rather than a particular version obsessively, so I’m just posting my favorite. […]
