Michael Zapruder & Harbors @ the Rickshaw Stop
On Thursday, I saw Michael Zapruder’s Rain of Frogs (myspace) and the Harbours (myspace) as part of the first night of the Mission Creek Music Festival.
I ran into the guys from The Bay Bridged who are sponsoring the MCMF. We hung out and chatted. They were nice guys and I encourage you reading their blog/ listening to their podcast if you want extensive coverage if this local scene. (Though, seriously, would it hurt them to put up a link to this blog?) (Hi Ben and Christian!)
First up were the Golden Messenger String Band (a version of His Golden Messengers, I think.) They didn’t have what one would think of as strings (violin, viola, cello or upright bass) and not even much of what sometimes see in string bands (mandolin, banjo). I was a little confused. They played a completely non-offensive and pleasant but unexciting set with a bit too much jamming for my taste.
Next up were the Harbours. They had a pretty standard rock set up: two guitars, bass, drums and keys. They’re pretty much a straight up rock band. I liked the lead singer/ songwriter’s voice and melodic stylings. I’m going to look more into this band.
Michael Zapruder’s Rain of Frogs was up next. I’ve been liking their latest album New Ways of Letting Go (buy) since I first heard it a few months ago. It’s a nicely orchestrated. The live set up was guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, but the songs didn’t seem to fail without the orchestration that the album had. I enjoyed his set.

I can’t believe it took me reading your blog to realize we didn’t have a link up. I apologize.
It was great finally meeting up! Perhaps we’ll see you at more of the festival and beyond!

Ha! I chided you into linking to me! I didn’t see you at the Kelley Stoltz tonight; which show were you guys at?
