song (obsessions) of the week, this week

This is a fourth edition of this column. Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Port O’Brien - I Woke Up Today (mp3) (from the sold out Nowhere to Run EP, track available from artist’s site)

I heard this track first earlier this week and I’ve been taken by its recklessness and odd sound.

Natalie:
Emily Jane White - Wild Tigers I’ve Known (mp3) (soundtrack unreleased, I believe, track available from artist’s site)

i just saw this movie “wild tigers i have known” and emily jane white has the title song at the end of the film it’s really good, she sounds alot like cat powr

Chris:
Jesu - Silver (mp3) (buy)

Described by Ragnar as a “dreamy, delicious hazy-psych-pop-melt on rye”, and I totally agree. The blissed out 2 minutes at the end with cymbals crashing and whatnot are simultaneously triumphant and glorious.

Andy:
Rainer Maria - Artificial Light (mp3) (buy)

I just recently rediscovered this album (my favorite of the Rainer Maria I own) when I bought it for a few bucks on CD. I’ve had it on vinyl for years, but I’ve gone long stretches without a functioning turntable, so a lot of stuff goes unlistened to. The opening track is simply solid - a good indie rawk song with guy/girl vocals and a good breakdown. It’s a great way to open an album.

Dave, store manager of Cross Roads Music:
A Tribe Called Quest - Check the Rhime (mp3) (buy)

i don’t know why, but I got on an old school hip-hop kick this week. low end theory is one of my favorite albums so i ended up listening to this track quite a lot. how can you not like tribe?

Honestly, that’s an odd, but good, mix of songs.

[…] Oakland-band (9 months out of the year) Port O’brien (myspace), who I’ve previously posted about (and been obsessed with) have an album out tomorrow on the American Dust record label. Actually the band calls it more of a collection of songs from their two EPs. […]

[…] Port O’brien I Woke Up Today (original post) I was (and am) fascinated by how this song somehow stays in control despite how wild it seems. […]
