friday: song obsessions for the week (7.6.07)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Lots of people are moving and changing various things in their life this week so it’s a small selection this time.

Adrian (me):
My Latest Novel - the Reputation of Ross Francis (mp3)

I’ve liked this tune for a few weeks and have since blogged about it. . I really like the chorus, with a nice build to it, chorussed vocals and a neat rhythm to it (downbeat, upbeat, downbeat, upbeat, downbeat downbeat). I also think “Please, sir”, at least in this case, is a great first line of a chorus. When I’d play it this past week, I’d just want more.

Rob:
16 Horsepower - Pure Clob Road (mp3) (buy)

I’ve been listening to quite a bit of 16 Horsepower this week, more because it’s come up randomly on my computer as I’ve been unpacking than for any other reason, but nevertheless the song “Pure Clob Road” off of Low Estate has been tenaciously stuck in my head for quite a while now.

Oz:
Jason Isbell - Dress Blues (mp3) (buy)

I hate protest songs. Jason Isbell’s “Dress Blues” is a song about war, but he’s not arrogant or pretentious like other songwriters (Colin Oberst). He wrote this song after a high school friend of his died in Iraq, but his voice is the perspective of a small town guy coming to grips with the death of a friend and the reality of war. It’s a song about grief, loss, and acceptance, and it deeply affects me every time I listen. I have two college friends in Iraq and this song damn near brings me to tears. I’ll choose something more uplifting next time around.

(also, check out this live video of the song)

This week we have a new panelist: Oz of HearYa. Thanks for joining us, Oz.
