great boston bucket drummer
I was in my old haunts of Boston a chunk of last week (hence the slight slow-down in the bloggin). I went to Fanueil Hall/ Quincy Market for perhaps the first time in eight years while I was walking around with some friends (and I wanted a cheesy Dice-K shirt–what better place to get one). We came across a great bucket drummer, just a kid really. For a moment I was disappointed that no one had a way to capture videos of him, but then I realized there would be stuff on youtube.
My friend Mike called him the “Aphex Twin of bucket drummers” for the speed and complexity of his beats. He was doing really interesting stuff both technique-wise and beat-wise. Stuff like playing a food service pan on both the up and downstrokes or damping and undamping the pan with his feet to get different sounds.
And not only was this kid wailing on these buckets, but he was hitting on girls while playing and changing around his set up at the same time. Crazy!
There are a couple more videos of him here and here

On a related note, I used to see this guy biking around boston with a bucket on his handle bars playing it while he biked. Well, he apparently moved to the Bay Area.

Those are some serious beats. I’d love to go out there with a stereo mic and record him. Or even better, give him $100 to let me multi-track one or two of his beats.
