amoeba: dr. dog live and the haul
Yesterday Dr. Dog (myspace) played an in-store at Amoeba. I decided to check them out for three reasons: 1) Vanderslice’s recommendation 2) I liked that song (err, cover) of theirs that Oz was obsessed with and 3) I liked their myspace songs enough.
I had dreams of zipping in and seeing them and zipping out again, but those went out the door because traffic was horrible getting into the city (one car broken down in the wrong place will screw everything up). I was late, but luckily I walked in just as they finished their sound check.
Dr. Dog’s set was fun. The one bearded guy with the guitar (ha! there were two!) had a gruffy voice and the bass player with the beard had a sweet voice. Both had lead vocals on various song, but I liked the parts the best where they both sang. Overall I liked the set.

Then it was time for the CD shopping.
My haul:
- The National Alligator filling out my collection a bit. I got boxer a few weeks ago and found that I already had Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers (that was a surprise, so just filling in the gaps.
- My Latest Novel Wolves I was interested in this band but their album isn’t released in the US (I don’t think). So it was much to my surpise that I not only found this, but found it for $4.99 used! Winner!
- Ola Podrida s/t How wrong can you file something? Try “Ola Podrida” in Electronica under ‘P’!! Hint: listen to the record. Folk or rock, not electronica (even though it’s out on Plug Research). There are 0 people in the band by the name of ‘Ola’. That said, I’m was excited to finally find this album. I’ve liked what I’ve heard and wanted to pick it up for a while.
- Eccentric Soul: Bandit Label the Eccentric Soul series from Numero Group is pretty much amazing. I hadn’t heard anything off this but decided to pick this up anyway
- Soul Sides, vol 2: the Covers put together by Oliver Wang of the Soul Sides blog and formerly a Bay Area DJ at KALX
- DNTEL Dumb Luck I like DNTEL’s stuff enough, so why not?
- Red House Painters Retrospective Red House Painters’ discography is good enough that I’ll just buy whatever I don’t already have when I see it used.
A good trip to Amoeba.
