Earlier this week, the Bottom of the Hudson’s tour van blew a tire and flipped multiple times. Their label, Absolutely Kosher explains:

Bassist Trevor Butler was killed in the accident and drummer Greg Lytle is currently in ICU in Chapel Hill, NC. The other members of the band, Eli Simon, Michael Prince and William Chesterton Chambers, suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.

I liked their EP Holiday Machine quite a lot and I’ve been slowly getting into their latest, Fantastic Hawk over the last few weeks. This is quite a blow to a promising young band. Absolutely Kosher is taking donations on behalf of the band for the family and for medical expenses. I’m sure the band also wouldn’t mind if you bought their records.

To me, this is eerily similar to the accident that ended the Exploding Hearts, with 3 of 4 members being killed a few years ago when their van rolled (driving home from San Francisco, actually). In that case, it’s speculated that the driver was tired and overcorrected to get back onto the road.

In both cases, people not wearing seat belts were killed. I’ve driven across the country in a van. I know you don’t want to wear the seatbelt while lounging in the back, but please just do it.

What else can you do to be safe? Know how to help prevent a tire blowout (with proper tire inflation, monitoring wear and regular tire inspections) and know what to do if you have a tire blow out. And, of course, don’t drive drowsy.
