Song obsession friday! (for the week ending august 3)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Elvis - Flaming Star (mp3) (buy)

Elvis at the Movies seems like another attempt to make money off of repackaging recordings by a dead singer. It may be, but through listening to it I discovered it has a lot of great songs on it. I’m not the hugest Elvis fan, but this song got me hooked. I like how little it sounds like your typical Elvis: it’s beat and instruments are much more like a Johnny Cash song from that era. The fast vibrato is so characteristic of Elvis’ voice, but otherwise there’s little clue this is him.

Keith:
The Yeah - Come On, Let’s Go! (mp3) (buy)

This song has led off many a mix for me, partially due to its meld of cute boy/girl vocals and stuttery retro-sampling indie-pop. But the obsession really commenced when I noted the thematic shift between the first and second verses. The halcyon vibe infused in the details of their blossoming romance gives way to the real world travails of low-income living. A guest rapper attempts to move the couple along with a positive spin, but the closing lyrics mated to the melody of “america is beautiful” leave us with an inconclusive impression. Where does their relationship go from there? I dunno, I never got past the first track on the disc!

Dave:
Madvillian - Money Folder (Four Tet remix) (mp3) (buy)

There’s just something so cool about this; maybe it’s the totally crazy Four Tet arrangement against Doom’s super smooth lyrics, maybe it’s the catchy hook, I don’t know but it’s great. The other Madvillain track (Great Day) on the Four Tet remix album has also had me obsessed now and then.

Andy:
Gym Class Hereos - Cupid’s Chokehold (mp3) (buy)

I was out in a few malls, looking for a photobooth, over this past weekend. While in H&M (on an unrelated errand), I heard this song. I’ve heard it a few times before, but for some reason, it really grabbed me this time, and when I got home, I found it online, and it’s been in my head ever since.

Those are some good tracks.

The Four Tet remix of Money Folder is sick. Watch yourself - that song’s been in my head for at least a year now.

[…] Madvillian Money Folder (Four Tet Remix) (original post, Dave’s obsession) This has been a slow burner. A few repeat listens one week and a few the next and a few the next. Four Tet’s production is crazy, dark and awesome and Madvillian’s flow seems is great. They seem to work very well together. […]
