50 states in 50 songs

I know there are state songs, but I thought it might be a lot more interesting to compile a list of songs that mention states in the title.

There are various reasons artists use states in song titles. Bands travel a lot, driving in vans across states that not many visit. This might be inspiration for a song. Or they may be homesick for their home state. Others might take the idea of a state to bring up the associated imagery; a songwriter from the Northwest may take a middle America state to bring up the imagery of small towns where everyone knows everyone but there are problems under the surface. A songwriter may just be effectively telling a story by setting a story in a particular place. States may be metaphors for bigger or smaller or just different things. There are travel songs, narratives that tell of going places. There are songs about running away to somewhere else, a different state. The reasons are endless, but the fact remains that there are an almost endless list of state songs and whatever the reason, the end results are often good.

As I’m off traveling across the globe, this acts as a way for me to remember the States, as it is, made up of 50 smaller and distinctive states. That’s not a bad country we’ve got going over there.

The “rules”:

  • The song has to mention the name of the state in the title
  • No repeating artists. (It’d be too easy–just use the Mountain Goats for pretty much every one)
  • State abbreviations and and unambiguous nicknames are okay e.g. “buckeye” == Ohio
  • “[state name] city” is not great, but depending how good the song is, might be okay. If the city isn’t in the state, it is not cool. e.g. a song called “Kansas City” wouldn’t count for Kansas
(and don’t tell me there’s a Kansas City in Kansas–if there’s a “Kansas City” song they’re almost definitely talking about the Missouri one)

As an added bonus, you may have noticed San Francisco’s state-named streets while going around the city. Clicking * if it appears after a state name will bring you to a map of that state street.

not making any friends up north calling canada a state

  2. from up north Says:

Canada is definitely not a state. A witty amendum would have helped that one be less insulting.

  3. MISTAHCOUGHDROP Says:

What’s funny is that Fox News Radio does a 50 States of Freedom song fest off and on. Some of their choices are ridiculous as their parameters are based upon “freedom” (in the GOP political cannon) or country western stars who suck up, or have sucked up, or who are dead. However, they had to go with Frank Sinatra for New York. He was referring to the city and not the state, of course.

Canada isn’t a state yet? Neither is Puerto Rico. By the way, where’s Iraq on this list? No state song about our latest acquisition?

  4. veh Says:

I think you should re-consider the track for Washington, since “Washington Bullets” by the clash really refers to Washington, D.C., not Washington State. otherwise, nice list.

  5. jack vendredi Says:

Washington Bullets is about DC not the State. Kinda obvious from the song title (The NBA Washington Wizards né Washington Bullets né Baltimore Bullets) and the lyrics.

  6. Ethan Says:

I am SO GLAD that you chose Explosions for Texas.
    KUDOS!!

  7. Adrian Says:

    Thanks for the comments.

The “51st States” choices were tongue-in-cheek. No one has mentioned that Washington, DC is not a state either. It is not either.

I took some poetic license with the Clash track for Washington state. Anyone have any (good)recommendations for songs that are specifically about Washington state?

  8. wberry Says:

“Four Hours in Washington” by Matt Ward? It may/may not be about the Washington in question, but certainly is a damn fine song.

  9. gillian Says:

I got a chuckle when I saw Canada on the list. Look, it’s the state that’s bigger in land mass than all the other states combined! And it has public healthcare!

There’s also “Canadian Song” by Matt Pond PA. I’m sure I could come up with others but that was the first one off my head.

[…] You can now download the 50 states mix as a whole: Adrian’s 50 States Mix (zip, megaupload link) […]

[…] Adrian (me): Damien Jurado - Ohio (mp3) (buy) As I was preparing the 50 songs for 50 states mix I was listening to a lot of “state” songs, some of them good, some of them not. I didn’t need to listen much to the Ohio songs—because it was a pretty clear choice for me (even though both Gillian Welch and Sun Kil Moon have good Ohio songs)—but I did anyway because I was reminded about how good this song was. It’s exactly where Damien excels: stories with all the right details. […]

Ohio Is For Lovers - Hawthorne Heights?

  13. libs Says:

This is a pretty impressive mix, mister. Nicely done. My “favs” list would be too long, it would be a near recap. There are a whole bunch of good tracks in there.

  14. matthew Says:

great compendium you got going here. i’m enjoying listening right now. Thanks!

  15. Lousy Mandarin Says:

Cool list. A few more (from my collection) for your consideration:

    Over the Rhine - OHIO
    Alejandro Escovedo - ARIZONA
    Camera Obscura - ALASKA
Michelle Shocked - Memories of East TEXAS
Mayflies USA - FLORIDA to the Radio
Elton John - WYOMING (not indie enough?)

  16. Todd Says:

I would nominate Todd Snider’s “Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues”, the hidden track on the album “Near Truths and Hotel Rooms.” It’s funny, and informative (just like Washington State)!

    Here are the lyrics:

For Washington State, I would nominate Todd Snider’s “Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues”, the hidden track on the album “Near Truths and Hotel Rooms.” It’s funny, and informative (just like Washington State)!

  18. Alexis Says:

Good song Todd … but while it may be about a city in the state of Washington — “Washington isn’t in the title. (Read first sentence at top.)

  19. Seamus Says:

    The Decemberists - California One

  20. Todd Says:

Ah, yes, I see, sorry about that - I skipped right down to the list of songs. Sicko did a cover of what I think is the Washington State official song, “Washington My Home” (where ever I my roam). Such covers aren’t specifically against the rules, but I can see how it might leave one dissatisfied (plus it’s only like a minute long!). James Talley wrote a song called “Richland, Washington”, about growing up near the Hanford nuclear plant. It seems there are surprisingly few songs Washington-titled songs which are actually referencing the state - I guess because of this DC-state dissonance.

  21. Lee Ann Says:

Umm, I think you mean Hasil ADKINS, not DICKENS as an ‘also considered’ for West Virginia.
    RIP, Haze.

  22. Lee Ann Says:

Idiot = me. It was Hazel Dickens, not Hasil Adkins. I know nothing.

  23. Radish Says:

Too bad Iowa City is actually part of Chicago.

  24. adrian Says:

Radish, are you sure that Eleni Mandell is actually talking about that? The most prominent Iowa City, at least according to the google search for Iowa City is the one in Iowa.

In fact, if you listen to the lyrics, she contrasts Iowa City to Chicago and New York, making me think it’s Iowa City, Iowa.

  25. What Says:

For colorado you should have picked the grizzly bear song.

  26. Helena Says:

Sister Nebraska by Tarkio = best overlooked state song!

  27. Dubi Says:

    What about Guam?

  28. David Says:

“Four Hours in Washington” by M. Ward is about Washington State, I believe since the artist is from Portlan, OR. Also, to be doubly sure, you could go with “Washington State” by Faun Fables. Also, Polvo has a song called “Snowstorm in Iowa”. New York songs seem to always be about NYC.

  29. peggy Says:

you also could have added wacko’s 50 states song from animaninacs cartoon. it’s on cd and dvd….. very good!

  30. Austin Says:

I’ve always wanted to do a playlist like this… but you did it so much better… :)

Oh, and also, you could have used ‘Oregon Girl’ by Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, but the Loretta Lyn one isn’t bad.
