5 bands I thought everyone listened to (and liked) in college

5 bands I thought everyone, no matter what description they fit, listened to (and liked) in college, at least a song or two:

  1. Bob Marley
  2. Aphex Twin
  3. Underworld
  4. U2
  5. Weezer (first album or two)

(A classic everyone-loves-in-high-school band would be Led Zeppelin, as pointed out by the Onion. Get the Led out!)

I was talking to a guy the other day and he didn’t know Aphex Twin and it threw my whole idea about the college experience off!

Maybe the bands were different in your days. What were they?

If you went to a liberal arts school in the Northeast, I’d substitute The Roots for Bob Marley and Ani DiFranco for U2.

Bob Marley was ridiculously popular – some students even put together a Bob Marley day. And, yeah, everybody was into Weezer, too. I can’t even listen to the two of them anymore. I dug Aphex Twin, but didn’t really know anyone else who did. I don’t think I knew anyone who was into Underworld, and I guess U2 was mildly popular, though I would substitute Radiohead in there. Bob Dylan, too. And Ozomatli – everybody loved Ozomatli.

yeah, i think radiohead might boot out underworld. And Ani Difranco definitely rivals weezer for that number 5 spot… maybe stanford is a weird anomaly, but lots of kids liked barenaked ladies, & The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was always playing everywhere.
