Song obsession friday! (for the week ending October 18)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
The Year Of – Calling Sky (mp3) (buy)

It came down to this and a seabear track for this week. It’s not often that I get obsessed with a 14 minute song and I didn’t actually listen to it that many times given the length, but more than any other song, I kept pressing “back” to hear it again. It’s got a nice post-rock like build along with interesting electro-organic instrumentation. For more, read what I said about it before.

Keith:
Fan Modine – Pageantry (mp3) (buy)

A song obsession over a song about a song obsession? How meta! Actually the object of the obsession is (yawn) a girl, with the song she wrote about the singer tripping the memory flood. Given the circumstances I can understand the need to dab that repeat button infinitely. For me, it’s the violin and the uptick in the vocals at “track number four” that sell it

Dave:
Jose Gonzalez – Killing for Love (mp3) (buy)

I haven’t gotten my hands on Jose’s new record yet, but this cut from it on his website has had me basically hypnotized every time I listen to it. Even though the lyrics vary little, it almost makes the
rhythmic guitar and melody get to me even more. The video for this song on the website is pretty cool, and goes with the video for ‘Down the Line’ (watch the ‘Down the Line’ one first). I hope the rest of the album is as good as these two tracks.

Scott:
Exuma – Mama Loi Papa Loi (mp3) (buy)

my brain is a little slow at the moment, so i can’t really think of anything cool to say…maybe this link can take its place.

As seems to be a pattern, this is a pretty eclectic set of tunes.

Exuma! Much thanks for posting this track. I’ve been wanting to hear it again for about a year now, after stumbling across it as the rather strange accompaniment to a video of cute cat shenanigans on Youtube. Will get around to picking up the Exuma record sooner or later, but for now at least I’ve got this track.
