unironic cover: jens lekman does graceland-era simon

I love that it (rightfully so) is done completely unironically.

(Also, I find it interesting that unlike many covers I love, this cover is very much like the original (sans chorus) and yet still distinctive and good.)

Anyone catch Jens’ Bimbo’s show a month ago?

Jens Lekman doesn’t have an ironic bone in his body. I personally wouldn’t want an ironic cover of “You can call me Al,” there’s a special place in my heart for Graceland after listening to it ~100 times carpooling to 3rd grade.

I was at Bimbo’s. One of the best concerts I’ve seen this year. He really didn’t seem like he wanted to leave the stage and played a ton of stuff from all three CDs. Great arrangements and a tight band too. I’ve been periodically looking for a bootleg, but it doesn’t look like anyone recorded one.

In the final encore, Jens played “Pocketful of Money” and the crowd sang back the Calvin Johnson sample, which is one of the rare times I’ve been completely elated by unsolicited crowd participation.

Man, that sounds awesome. Too bad I missed it.
