Song obsession friday! (for the week ending December 7)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Morning Benders – Patient Patient (Live at KZSU) (mp3) (studio version not available yet, but you can buy previous releases)

Something in the last week, perhaps making this list, got me listening through some of the tracks from the Morning Benders’ apperance on KZSU. This track, an unreleased one, stuck out and I found myself singing about being a patient patient throughout the day.

Keith:
Edson – Sunday, Lovely Sunday (mp3) (buy)

Today’s radio show was an all-Swedish theme, which provided me with the occasion to spin this wintry weekend tune. Pelle Carlberg led this impeccable twee pop band before splitting off on his own. While his solo record isn’t bad, it lacks the ebullient charm on display in this simple song.

Scott:
Marconi Notaro – Sinfonia em re (mp3) (buy)

i’m in england and it’s cold. i first heard ‘Sinfonia em rĂ©’ by Marconi Notaro on KDVS this summer and listening to it helps a bit. but not completely.

Natalie K:
the Muslims – Extinction (mp3) (not available? artist’s myspace)

Only fitting that I use a San Diego band for my inaugural song obsession, right? I’ve been going to these guys’ shows for about six months, and their growth as a band has been amazing. I just saw them at a house party last Saturday, and they killed it – even started a mosh pit! The bass line on this song attaches itself with hooks inside your brain – in that good way.

Rob:
P.D.Q. Bach – New Horizons in Music Appreciation (mp3) (buy)

I had a decision to make regarding this week’s song obsession. What is the best indication of an obsession: playing a song back in one’s head pretty much nonstop and singing it out loud at least twice a day, or sharing a song with everyone one meets and saying “Listen! Isn’t that fantastic?!” If the former, then I have erred and my obsession this week should be Crooked Fingers’ “You Must Build A Fire.” Unfortunately for the Fingers, though, is the fact that, after having heard two sports announcers doing a play-by-play for Beethoven on CBC Radio when I was in grade school and wondering for years upon years where it came from, I just this week rediscovered the piece and it is simply too funny not to share.

Edwin:
The Field – A Paw in My Face (mp3) (buy)

The new kid on the block is Natalie K of itstoosunnyouthere, a San Diego blog, but before too long she will gaining eligibility for the SF Music Blog Olympics. The ‘K’ is to distinguish front KZSU DJ Natalie (R-T), another (occasional) contributor to song obsessions.
