that’s an odd song to get a lot of airplay in stores in Taipei
Granted, I recognize zero mandopop songs so I have no idea how much a particular songs repeats in stores in Taipei, but among English language songs, the one with the highest frequency, that I’ve notice, is One of Us. You know the one, the Joan Osbourne song that goes “What if God was One of Us?”
In a largely Buddhist/ Taoist/ Confucianist nation with somewhat “inadequate” or “broken” English skills, what would be the appeal of an English language song about presumably a Judeo-Christian God?
Maybe they just like the tune and that the lyrics are simple enough for a non-native speaker to understand. I’m really not sure.
Also, apparently Prince recorded a version of this song? That must be something. Anyone have an mp3 laying around that they want to toss on yousendit or the like?
Video after the jump if you need a reminder of which song it is. Or if you want to watch a close up of a nose-pierced girl for a few minutes.
