Beggars Group (4AD) has put up the first mp3 from the upcoming Mountain Goats album, Heretic Pride. In a way we’re going to get with the MGs–good lyrics, John Darnielle’s nasaly voice, strummed guitar. But there are subtle changes around that. For instance, I think Scott Solter is great, but his production on Get Lonely didn’t sound great, so I’m excited to see and hear the return of John Vanderslice as the producer of this one. (He also produced Sunset Tree and We Shall All be Healed.)

Jon Wurster’s drums are pretty present on “Sax Rohmer #1″. It also sounds like Erik Frielander’s cello is around. Both have added to the MG sound previously (JW on tour, EF on recordings). It’s not the best MG track ever but it makes me excited to hear the rest of the album.
