Song obsession friday! (for the week ending January 18)
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Pony Up! - The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die) (mp3) (buy)
While I wasn’t flat-out obsessed with any songs this week, I did have a craving for this super catchy number a few times–I was listening to other songs and just sort of needed to hear this song instead. I first hear this when I saw the band open for the Mountain Goats a couple times last March. I liked it then but hadn’t listened to it in a couple months. I can’t really explain why this came up again, but its burrowing back towards the front of my brain this week is definitely worthy of a “song obsession” selection.

Keith:
Bloodrock - Sable and pearl (mp3) (buy)
OK, so I dropped a Bloodrock reference on y’all last week … not exactly the best way to endear myself to a crowd craving current confections. Well, I’ll compound my error by featuring a track from Bloodrock’s 2 LP (1970) which contains equal parts sensitive hippie bleating and far-out stoner rocking. It punctuates last week’s point, which surely is fresh in everyone’s memory. Future Pilot AKA? Remember?!? Oh hell …

David (not Dave):
ABX - I’m a Flirt (R Kelly v Broken Social Scene) (mp3) (by ABX/ the hood internet)
I heard “I’m A Flirt” on the pitchfork top 100 of ‘07 and was instantly annoyed at it for being so good. Pedophiles should not make music this good. Smoove produced r&b featuring T-autotune-Pain should not be this good. But I couldn’t help being impressed with the flow and production on the studio track. This mashup makes me feel less bad because it throws out the sexy keyboards for the driving beat of the catchiest song off the last BSS album. It works amazingly well.

I’m an old sucker for Bloodrock. In grade 6 our teacher encouraged us to bring in a song to play for a little St. Valentine’s Day sock hop. I brought in D.O.A. A ugly girl who liked Alice Cooper and wore see through blouses kissed me somewhat sloppily and said, “I love the dead but these guys suck. Are you going roller skating on Saturday? I stole a joint from my dad’s stash I’ll smoke with you.”
