Song obsession friday! (for the week ending January 25)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Sea Wolf - Middle Distance Runner (mp3) (buy)

This week no other song had a chance. On Monday or Tuesday I already knew this song would end up being my song obsession. The foot-tap rhythm, the upbeat guitar and the melancholy vocal melody really make it worm its way into my brain. The cello part doesn’t hurt either.

Keith:
the Who - Tattoo (mp3) (buy)

The 33.3 book series is perfect for my attention-deficit brain …relatively short (-128 pages) books written about the music I love and avariety of artistic urges and interpretations behind them. Currently I’m winding my way through The Who’s Sell Out, which has a fascinating historical section on legal UK pirate radio stations during the mid-60’s. Of course the perfect soundtrack is the album itself, my favorite song right now is this rather amusingly fey tale about acquiring a Tattoo.

Dave:
Flaming Lips - She Don’t Use Jelly (mp3) (buy)

It’s short, fun and catchy, that’s all. No super-underlying-theme-meaning for me this time.

Natalie K
Great Lake Swimmers - Moving Pictures Silent Films (mp3) ()

Melancholic, wintry songs will forever be my downfall. This song makes me want to snuggle up in bed and listen to the rain falling on the roof of my porch.
