Maus Haus, Battlehooch @ the Hemlock

Thursday night after hanging out with some of the the Bay Bridged staff, some of us decided to go to the Hemlock to catch the Maus Haus, Battlehooch, Tempo No Tempo show.

Maus Haus jammed onto the stage, jamming

I hadn’t really heard much about Maus Haus, except apparently they’d been building some buzz just on the strength of their demos (available at their myspace it seems). I also knew that it was people from the Lovely Public and Social Studies, two bands that have some following in their own right.

We got there just before Maus Haus went on and the place was already jammed. There was a buzz in the air, as if we were collectively experiencing something special. There were also about a dozen people with mouse ears made out of head bands and balloons. I can see that catching on…

The band jammed the stage with seven or so members playing a variety of synths, electric pianos, percussion, bass, flute; soprano, tenor and baritone saxophone; glockenspiel and probably a few things I couldn’t see. Their music was a synthy experimental pop blend with some horn orchestrations. I’m not a huge fan of a lot of the bands in that experimental pop vein (Animal Collective, etc) but the band put on a good and entertaining set. I expect to hear more from this band.

I’d heard a lot about Battlehooch’s live show. They went on to a slightly smaller crowd (to their defense, the Hemlock had stopped letting people in because it was “sold out” though many people seemed to have just gone for Maus Haus and then left). They put a ton of energy into their show and the main guy very entertainingly conducted the band while singing.

I was pretty exhausted after a long week, so I headed out around the middle of their set. Sorry, Tempo No Tempo!
