or, the whale; pete & j @ the independent, review, photos
Thursday night I caught the the Deli SF and KALX-presented Or, the Whale (myspace) and Pete and J (myspace) show at the the Independent.
Pete and J were first up after I got there. They had their own section of the crowd which was pretty appreciative. They did a fun set of pop songs that reminded me at times of Ben Folds, Guster and Simon & Garfunkel. I can imagine their sound would appeal a lot to the college crowd.
A highlight of their set was when they brought on Lindsay, Julie, Tim and Matt from Or, the Whale to do a nice cover of my favorite Gillian Welch song, “Look at Miss Ohio”.
It’s gotten to the point where I just assume Or, the Whale will put on a great show. My assumption wasn’t wrong. They put a lot of energy into the show. The sound was great and they pulled off the slow songs as well as they did played the crowd-rousers.
Set list (according to the band’s written set list–quotes indicating what’s written on the set list when corresponding song name can’t be figured out):
- Rusty
- Rabbit
- Life & Death
- “W.J”
- Crack a Smile
- Givin’ Up Time
- Bound to go Home
- Gonna Have To
- “T.P.”
- Shasta
- “N.L.B.”
- Call and Response
- Rope Don’t Break
- Fight Song
