song obsession friday! (for the week ending june 13)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - Oh How I’d Miss You (mp3) (buy)

I was making a mix this week for someone and it needed to be robust–that is, I wanted them to be able to listen to it a lot of times without it making them crazy. I figured a good place to start was some past song obsessions so I listened back through some of those. This song caught my ear again. I love the melody but I mostly love how much style and how much this grooves on the backbeats.

Keith:
Rocketship - Hey, Hey Girl (mp3) (not in print)

After last week’s selection I began considering the greatest indiepop 7″s of the 90’s. In my book this effort can’t be topped, a sharp two minute injection of rollicking energy that makes me feel like a 4 year-old on a carousel again. This was pulled directly from the vinyl, oh if only for a CD retrospective of Rocketship!

Andy:
Bon Iver - Skinny Love (mp3) (buy)

So this was a bit of a toss-up. Upon request, I provided “Skinny Love”, but on further reflection, I realized that I’d been skipping through about three tracks on the record pretty consistently - “Flume”, “Skinny Love”, and “For Emma”. I’m just not sure which one I like the most right now. “Skinny Love” grabbed me first, but “For Emma” is everything I ever wished My Morning Jacket could be. For the most part, I’m still getting over how much I like the combination of heartland acoustics
and soul singing.

Natalie:
Swim Party - The Kids are a Drag (mp3) (not out yet, artist’s website)

I’m still stuck on the Swim Party song from last week. Might be for awhile.

Dave:
Son Volt - Picking Up the Signal (mp3) (buy)

This was a high school song obsession for me and when it popped up this week I couldn’t help myself, it went on repeat again. It’s one of those songs for me, that brings back memories of mowing the lawn with my trusty Walkman on my hip. The guitar hook is also ridiculously catchy.

Bon Iver is a very obsession-worthy band as evidenced by the fact that it’s a different panelist’s obsession for a record fourth time, and the third with “Skinny Love”.

Bon Iver’s, For Emma, Forever Ago, is through and through obsession worthy. I can’t stop listening to it. Additionally, it is rare that I skip a song– I listen to the whole thing, again and again. And I have “Song Obsessions” to thank! I fell in love with “Skinny Love” the first time it was on this list, and I haven’t stopped listening to it yet.

Nice post, I believe there is a Rocketship CD out there, called A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness, so try that out to find!
