song obsession friday! (for the week endings June 20)
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
the Rural Alberta Advantage - Don’t Haunt This Place (mp3) (buy)
From about second 6 on the first listen, I was obsessed. And it only gets better as the song goes on. I love the drums especially. Tight and complex. The melancholy vocals and cello really work as well.

Keith:
Scott Walker - My Death (mp3) (buy)
I’ve always found Scott Walker’s most powerful moments were entwined with the lyrics of Jacques Brel. It was the melding of opposites, Walker’s sumptuous crooning provided a velvet-lining to the dustbin world that Brel’s lyrics inhabited. Brel’s gaze always picked up the dark underside of culture, Walker added an absurdly romantic sheen while still acknowledging the urgency of the situation.

Bowie’s version of My Death = maximum cool. Slightly less croonie than the Walker version, but a bit more (I think fittingly) depressing. If you haven’t, check it out.

Bowie’s live version on the Ziggy Stardust soundtrack is seared into my consciousness from a long bout of high-school age obsessiveness with that live album.
