song obsession friday! (for the week ending july 11)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Birdmonster – Born to Be Your Man (mp3) (out August 5, artist website)

This song is catchy and unabashedly pop. But it’s also got an uncertainty to it and some really melancholy lines in it that stick with me. Mostly, though, it’s a great summer song.

It also makes me think of Sam Cooke’s You were Made for Me, like a less certain song from the opposite perspective.

Keith:
the Pacific Ocean – Tom Petty (mp3) (label website)

Tim Hinely of the Dagger zine had a mailorder and label for a short while called Skyblue … while it was around he put out the Popular World compilation packed with a high (for me at least) ‘favorite band’ ratio. Amongst the fine never-released-anywhere-elsers on this disc is a relatively
heavy tune by The Pacific Ocean.

Oz:
Dr. Dog – the Ark (mp3) (pre-order)

I can’t wait for Dr. Dog’s Fate to hit the virtual shelves later this month. “The Ark” has it all. It’s more grown up than past Dr. Dog tracks, has some great guitar riffs and searing vocals.
