song obsession friday! (for the week ending August 1)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Breathe Owl Breathe – Toboggan (mp3) (buy)

Holy crap this banjo part is just about the best one I’ve heard in a long time. The (smog)-y vocals put me off a bit first but after a few listens, they really helped hook me into this songs.

Keith:
January – I See Myself in You, Pt 2 (mp3) (buy)

January perfectly melded the slowcore and shoegazing styles into one sumptuous lp on Poptones back in 2001, one could imaging this surfacing 10 years earlier on Creation. Too bad, while its genius likely would have been revered back then its import-only label status left it only for those who were truly searching for this sound. It’s a lifelong quest – I likely will never give it up.
