in retro-soul withdraw? see raphael saadiq at bimbo’s

Are you in some retro-soul withdraw since James Hunter came through a month ago? Don’t want to pay $85 to see Sharon Jones?

I haven’t heard a lot of producer Raphael Saadiq’s (myspace) solo songs–and his third solo release comes out September 16–but from what I’ve heard on his myspace and elsewhere, his show tomorrow, Wednesday, August 20, at Bimbos ($22, 21+) seems like it’ll be a lot of fun. His sound hearkens back to the Motown-era in a big way. His production is strong and his voice is a little thin but it works really well in what he’s trying to do.

I think this’ll be one of those shows where you’ll look back and wonder how you could have possibly seen him at a venue the size of Bimbo’s.

For those of you in the rest of the country, he has limited dates in NYC, DC and Philly. Check his myspace for more info.

I had to make one correction… “The Way It Is” is actually Saadiq’s 3rd solo album. His other 2 are “Instant Vintage” and “Raphael Saadiq is Ray Ray”

    Thanks. I’ve corrected the post.
