song obsession friday! for the week ending Sept 12.
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Bon Iver & Sarah Siskind – Lovin’s For Fools (Live in Nashville) (mp3)
Sarah Siskind – Lovin’s For Fools (mp3) (buy)
I’ve heard Bon Iver’s version of this song before, but this is the week I haven’t been able to get enough of either of these versions of this gorgeous songs. The Bon Iver version is fragile and heartbreaking. Sarah Siskind’s version is more stately and straight-forward but also has a different and deep emotional reservoir in it. Time will tell which version I like better, but for now I can’t get enough of either

Good Horsey – But She Knew (mp3) (not in print?)
A bit of an obscurity from the mid-90’s here, but I’ve always returned to this track when looking for sing-songy spoken wordish songs for creepy mixes. The lyrics never really coalesce into meaning, but the pieces presented certainly paint a dark portrait. It’s much in keeping with the accompaniment, which seems to slip in an out of consciousness as occasional found sounds worm their way in and out of time.
