song obsession friday! (for the week ending August 19)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Toromiro - Intervals (mp3) (buy)

I bought the EP after seeing these guys on Tuesday. I think they sound checked and opened with this song as well as starting their EP with it, so the first impressions I’ve gotten of this band is this song. It’s got a lovely lilting and hypnotic quality to it and the vocals have just the right amount of sadness in them.

Keith:
Windsor for the Derby - Hold On (mp3) (buy)

Windsor for the Derby’s full-lengths are always spotty affairs, and this most recent one is no different. The wordless ambient pieces do little for me, but the full-band swipes at Yo La Tengo-ness achieve their goal with incredible accuracy.

Dave:
the Anniversary - Alright for Now (mp3) (buy)

I was in the record store and just happened to see that the The Anniversary had released a b-sides and rarities compilation. I’m not usually one for those sorts of things, but it interested me so I snagged it. The second track on the first disc stuck out with all the energy and catchiness they had on Designing a Nervous Breakdown.

I swear this obsession has nothing to do with Adrian’s post on Tuesday, although I thoroughly agree with him.

Andy:
Samamidon - Tribulation (mp3) (buy)

It should be pretty obvious by now that I’m a sucker for the quiet, pretty stuff. That noted, I’m not sure how I’ve gone so long without hearing Samamidon. I found him tonight through last.fm’s recommendation engine. I’m pretty picky, though, so I tend not to trust recommendations, unless they come from people. Pandora has disappointed me far too many times. I loaded his page, the player started, and it took me about 4 seconds before I knew I’d be listening to this one over and over.

Scott:
R. Stevie Moore - I’ve Begun to Fall in Love (mp3) (buy)

I’m a big fan of the original version of “the Heart is a Lonely Hunter” on that new Anniversary disc. The whole thing is pretty decent, really.

Andy– I, too, found Samamidon through last.fm this week, and I had a very similar reaction. Good stuff, good stuff indeed.
