song obsession friday! (for the week ending December 12)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Adrian (me):
Koernag Namadlanga – Ngiyalila (mp3) (buy)

While making my best-of list I should have been listening to those albums and albums that were on the fringe, I would think. Instead, I found myself listening to a great Ndebele/ North Sotho compilation. This track probably got a slightly higher percentage of the plays, but I was obsessed with a lot of the collection.

For this track’s part, I love the pickup on the upbeat and the turns of the guitar. The laid-back call and response vocals complete the song.

Keith:
The Liberty Ship – Shine On (mp3) (buy)

It’s not the best song ever titled “Shine On” (we’ll give that one to The House of Love) but it is the most retro-60’s. There’s something a little off about this tune, perhaps the singer’s endearingly weak voice or the sub-Felt creakiness of the guitar but it all coalesces so well, especially when the solo takes over.

Andy:
Damien Jurado – Gillian was a Horse (mp3) (daytrotter session, buy the original)

I’m loving that first track, thanks! Finding something that the little wife and I both like to listen to (me with my folk/punk/electro affinities and her with her world/R&B taste)is often a challenge. I found your blog via twitter, can’t believe it took me this long, xoxo
