song obsession friday! (for the week ending january 16)
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Marv Johnson – Come to Me (mp3) (buy)
I’ve been listening to a lot of early Motown recently. This was their first single. It’s pretty great. I love the main vocals and the bass/ bass vocals line. But mostly I love this track because it makes me smile a lot.

The Who – Hall of the Mountain King (mp3) (buy)
Ah, the wonder of superfluous bonus tracks. They’re a special treasure trove for the music obsesser in me, perhaps inspired by my industrious nature to waste as little as possible. I imagine the musicians declining to knock off early for the pub and instead using that extra 20 minutes of studio time to slap together a quick take of something that’s been obsessing one of the band members. Occasionally, one of those efforts deserves obsession-worthy status of its own.

Bon Iver – Blood Bank (mp3) (buy)
This song is gorgeous. This whole past week it’s been running in a loop around my brain, maybe spurred by the fact that my dad is in the hospital, or maybe because it just matches my mood exactly. I’m looking forward to the new EP that’s being released next week.

I really love “Come to Me.” Such a great song =-)
