song obsession friday! (for the week ending Feb. 6)

Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I’ve collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their “song obsessions of the week.” Quite often it’s easy to explain why the song is good; it’s much hard to explain why we’re obsessed. Maybe you’ll become obsessed with one of these.

Looks like I didn’t get any panelist contributions this week. Between that and a cough that’s just ripping up my throat, I’m a little lazy getting this posted.

Adrian (me):
Henry Lumpkin – Don’t Leave Me (mp3) (buy)

Fanfarlo – I’m a Pilot (mp3) (album not out yet, from PR)

For me, there are at least two types of song obsessions. There are the songs with impact, the ‘holy sh*t!’ songs. These are songs where my initial (and continued) amazement cause me to listen to obsessively. Then there are songs that are more along what I expect and they’re good. It’s not always obvious why, but something about them makes me hit repeat a lot.

For me, “Don’t Leave Me” was a ‘holy sh*t’ song. I was just blown away by this song’s anguish but in that nice tuneful Motown package. “I’m a Pilot” is just a good song and it’s produced well–specifically, it’s produced in a way that brings out the qualities I already like in Fanfarlo.
