P4k reports that Iron & Wine (myspace) will be releasing a 2 CD/ 3 LP b-side and rarity collection called Around the Well on May 19 (on subpop, of course). I wasn’t too excited about his latest, Shepard’s Dog, but I’ve been collecting rarities of his for almost as long as I’ve known about his music.
One of the songs slated to be on the album is one Iron & Wine song that I’ll always be in the mood for, no matter if I’m generally in an Iron & Wine mood or not. It’s a wonderful cover of the Flaming Lips’ “Waiting for Superman”.

And now for a bonus: a rarity that’s not going to be on Around the Well: “Sleeping Diagonally” off of Six Part Seven’s re-stuff (remix, remake, etc) album Lost Notes and Forgotten Songs. Sam Beam totally transformed this song from the originally (which was on Six Part Seven’s Things Shaped in Passing). It’s classic Iron & Wine.

The last few times Iron & Wine played in San Francisco, he’s played places like Golden Gate Party (Hardly Strictly Bluegrass), Bimbo’s and the Warfield. Back in 2004, he played Great American–it was magical–but I don’t think he’s played a place that small since. Today’s announcement about the album and tour said he’s actually going to play a venue quite a bit smaller than the Great American (350 capacity at Swedish vs. 600 at Great American).
5/6, 5/7 Iron & Wine @ Swedish American, 7:30pm, $25, a/a
Tickets for those dates go on sale next Friday, February 20 at 10am. I’ll definitely remind you of that in next week’s on sale soon post.
