free shows: maus haus @ benders; yoni wolf & boy in static @ apple store
I wanted to briefly cover two free shows I saw over the past couple days.
I hit up the Noise Pop happy hour on Friday at Benders. Maus Haus played. As I walked into Benders, I soon realized that it was packed with the Mission hipsterati and was about 15 degrees warmer than any reasonable bar should be. I made a mental note to say hi to a few people and then head out. Then Maus Haus started and they sounded good and time flew buy. They played a tight set of their highly rhythmic art rock.
Yesterday, I saw Yoni Wolf of Why and Boy in Static at the Apple Store downtown. The audience was slightly different here. More varied in style, one could say. I like Boy in Static, particularly their glitchy debut album Newborn but their live show didn’t do it to me. In the live set lead guy Alex Chen sang with an Antony-like warble vibrato that I, at least, found off-putting. I didn’t come in expecting much from Yoni Wolf–I respect what he’s doing with Why?, but I don’t love their stuff. He put on a nice set, though, with only his voice and a Rhodes. It was quite interesting and even beautiful at times, particularly his dark but relatively straightforward version of the hymn “This is the Day”, which he said he woke up with in his head and decided to make an arrangement of.
