song obsession friday! (for the week ending april 9)

Adrian (me):
Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti (mp3) (buy)

I have a tendency to go back to one album of an artist, even if I like a lot of their stuff. For instance, I listen to Pedro the Lion’s It’s Hard to Find a Friend a lot but I don’t listen to Winners Never Quit much despite the fact that I know it has good stuff on it. I’m not sure why, but it happens.

I mostly listen to Sufjan’s Seven Swans, but recently I started listening to Michigan and his other albums more. Hearing this song for the first time in a while was like coming home. It was so familiar and lived in…and I needed to hear it again.

Keith:
I Was a King – Not Like This (mp3) (buy)

So for the first time in awhile I perused the aisles of our local independent store and filled my hands with new and not-so-new releases. The CD which specifically drew me there was the debut release by I Was A King. If someone told me this was a secret unreleased Teenage Fanclub album from 1990 I would sincerely believe them, as they’ve nailed the vibe perfectly. Play this obsession-worthy song back-to-back with “Star Sign” and hopefully you’ll hear my point.
